AB&I participates in Association of Manufacturers, Bay Area Summit
June 5, 2018
AB&I participated in the Association of Manufacturers, Bay Area (AMBayArea) Summit on 24th at the Scottish Rite Center in Oakland, California. The AMBayArea is a trade group dedicated to addressing the daily challenges that Bay Area manufacturers face in workforce development, education, group purchasing, collaboration and grassroots advocacy.
Carolyn Lee, Executive Director for the Manufacturing Institute was the keynote speaker. Carolyn addressed manufacturing in California and the fact that 36,000 manufacturers produce almost $300 billion in output. California had over 185,000 job openings last year and ranks 4th on the list of top states for manufacturing jobs created year-over-year. Carolyn leads the workforce development efforts to close the skills gap and inspire Americans to enter the U.S. manufacturing workforce, focusing on women, youth and veterans. This message resonated with all the manufacturers and non-manufacturers represented in the audience especially the discussion about how best practices increase the talent pipeline.
Breakout sessions included Collaborative Robots–Implementing New Technology; Supply Chain–What is Your Weakest Link; Tax Cuts and Job Acts-Take Advantage Now; and Implementing Lean–How to avoid failure?
The Summit closed with Workforce Panels comprised of six members representing the City of Oakland, Education (High School and Community College), Apprenticeships and AB&I.
This was a great opportunity to showcase AB&I’s products and legacy in Oakland. Kevin Doran, Ivan Berejkoff and Roberto Ramirez were great Ambassadors for everything that AB&I represents: recycling, community outreach, 112 years in Oakland, etc.
Jose Corona, Director of Equity and Strategic Partnerships-Office of Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, was the Master of Ceremony. He spoke with Michael Lowe and Kevin Doran about an initiative Mayor Schaaf is developing to buy back guns in Oakland to reduce crime. Jose was very interested in our service to the Oakland Police Department to melt confiscated guns.
Thank you to our team members that contributed to make the summit a resounding success for AB&I.
