The goal of the AB&I environmental program is to protect the environment for generations to come. Through a comprehensive program of water treatment, air pollution reduction, recycling and solid waste management, AB&I has set the standard for responsible foundry practices and policies. For example, since 2006, AB&I has reduced natural gas usage by 45 percent and has cut energy consumption by 5 million kilowatt hours.

AB&I's Environmental Program is based on the ISO 14000 standards for management, measurement, evaluation and auditing of environmental progress. By investing heavily in pollution-control technologies, AB&I has been able to dramatically improve environmental quality, both in the foundry and in the surrounding community.

AB&I's extensive efforts and investments have been rewarded in two important ways: First, we have the satisfaction of knowing that we're doing everything we can to keep our air and water clean, a major benefit to both the community and our own team members. Second, AB&I has been honored to receive several awards and special recognitions from such notable agencies as:

  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • California State Environmental Protection Agency
  • Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD)

Keeping our foundry and community clean and safe are important values shared by all AB&I team members, and we look forward to continuing these efforts as we move forward.

  • 2018 Pollution Prevention - First Place: AB&I Foundry - Innovative use of Cupola as an Oxidation device
  • 2013 Outstanding Environmental Progress - McWane

The following factors are considered in the selection process for the current calendar year using the previous calendar year as the baseline:

  • Progress on successful completion of audit and other corrective actions
  • Improvements in overall compliance status
  • Improvements in relationship with regulators (local, state and federal)
  • Changes in quality and amount of resources applied to environmental management
  • 2013 Most Improved Recordable Injury Rate - McWane

AB&I is awarded the Most Improved TRIR Rate — Foundry.

The Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) is determined by taking the number of incidents occurred in a year’s period which require medical treatment, restricted work activity, or lost time and multiplying that by 200,000 and dividing by the total number of hours worked at the facility during the year. The Most Improved TRIR Rate is determined by calculating at year end, the TRIR rate for each of our foundries and looking at the percent improvement when compared to their previous year end TRIR. The facility with the greatest percentage of improvement from the previous year is given the award.

The same process as noted above is done for all other facilities which are not considered a foundry and the award is given for the most improved over their previous year’s rate.

  • 2013 Pollution Prevention Challenge - Second place: AB&I Foundry; Dropout Coke Injector
  • 2011 NPEP Achievement Award - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • 2010 Most Improved Recordable Injury Rate - McWane
